Discourse and society
In this post-modern world, we have so many texts, speeches, images, music, videos, performances and so on. The world was not that much convoluted as it is right now. As time goes on, the world gets complicated and humans face some afresh developments. The combination of all these speeches, books, texts, videos, and images make a discourse. Thus, these discourses impact our minds and thoughts. That’s what this literature is going to unfold.
There is continuity among all these things. A compact continuity and chain are hidden right there. Because, all these texts, Speeches, music, videos, and so on are based on one theme. They talk about one thing and there lies a strong coherence. For instance, every political party talks about one theme (Some parties claim economic progress is important, some parties utter basic needs are necessary, some parties are supporting educational advancement and so on). Hence, speeches, books, and even videos have a single theme and it goes on.
How does construction of our thoughts happen?
Furthermore, these discourses construct our thoughts. Because, listening to these speeches, reading these books, texts and videos construct our thoughts. Our thought construct is the product of society. The society produces discourse and we are part of society, so we are in contact with these discourses. Owing to this, they shape our mental thoughts.
Additionally, we all have some mental pictures of our societies. For instance, some nations would feel that they are the bravest, strongest, intelligent, and hardworking nations. However, they might not be like that. Besides, some nations would have a negative mental picture of other societies. For instance, they would think that blah nations are wicked, uncivilized, and so on. Thus, it might not be the case. Then what’s this? Who has constructed this mentality? Is this the reality? Of course, not! This is the constructed reality and constructed by these discourses, which is the outcome of society.
In addition to that, beyond this constructed reality there is the reality. Once one starts considering and examine critically these constructed and wrong realities, he/she would definitely find out the original reality lies there behind the constructed reality. Have you ever thought about these constructed traditions? If not, start considering now and reach the authentic realities. Don’t ever claim that you are better than others or others are weaker than you till your knowledge about the entire context. Unfold yourself and society, including the words of your elders critically, and there you will find the reality.
In a nutshell, society produces discourses, and discourses shapes society. This is the discursive practice. There is a mutual relationship between discourse and society. And it shapes our mentality.
