The World Health Organization says the new group consisting of experts is the last chance to find the actual origin of the Covid-19 virus. WHO nominated 26 experts, who may join the Scientific Advisory Group on the origin of Novel Pathogens (Sago). Almost after 2 years, since the virus was detected in Wuhan city, still the origin is unknown. Different theories prevail regarding the origin of the virus.
The newly constituted team will look into the reasons for how the virus first emerged. Either it is a transmission from animals to humans or it is leaked from the laboratory. Chinese officials are strongly denying the theory that it is leaked from the laboratory.
Why WHO is taking the Lab-leak theory so seriously?
A delegation of WHO flew to China in February to investigate the origin of the Covid-19 virus. They concluded that the virus spread from bats but still needs further investigation. The teams also called the theory of “leaked from laboratory” extremely unlikely.
Later on, the Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr. Tedros, added that the process of investigation was not satisfactory due to the shortage of data and lack of support of China.
The proposed 26 members team of the Sago group includes 6 members of the previous group who visited China. Apart from coronavirus, the current team will also observe the origin of other high-risk pathogens in China.
DR Tedros argues that understanding the origin of new pathogens is extremely important for the prevention of such future outbreaks. He and other WHO officials clearly stated that the theory of lab leak cannot be ignored.
Emergencies director of WHO, Michael Ryan, said that the work of the newly established team may be the last chance to find the origin of the Covid-19 virus. WHO announced the new team after a report published by CNN. The report stated that China is preparing to test thousands of blood bank samples that were taken in the last months of 2019.
On the other hand, the Chinese ambassador to the UN in Geneva said that the work of Sago should not be politicized. Teams of WHO must be sent to other countries in order to investigate the origin of the virus.
